Sam Tung Uk Museum

An interesting fact is that earlier on the site of the museum there was a fortress of one of the ancient Hakka dynasties. It was not only a home for its owners, but also served as a safe haven for them, protecting the tribe from attacks by enemy clans and dynasties. The foundation of the Sam Tung Uk fortress, which has been remembered in history for all subsequent centuries, was laid in 1786. Attacks and raids by enemy dynasties were common in those distant and difficult times. Therefore, the fortress was rebuilt more than once, the necessary fences, fortifications and buildings were completed. Over time, a small town grew up on its territory. Many centuries later, closer to the present time, the need for protection and the need for permanent shelter has disappeared. The historical monument of the culture of the people was transformed by the government authorities into a museum. It has retained its name since the old days.

The old fortress, which has already become a historical museum, hides many secrets within its walls. A large number of exhibits and relics testify to the rich and diverse life of two areas: peacetime and war. To make it easier for museum visitors to plunge into the world of the most ancient secrets of the history and culture of the people, some part of the fortress was restored. The idea of adding several additional rooms to the existing museum helped to make the visit more vivid and intense, thanks to the impressions and emotions that tourists experience during the visit. Its halls are very impressive, such as:

  • the hall where most of the ancient exhibits are presented to visitors;
  • a room where the most interesting lectures are held every day, which help to feel the spirit of the ancient fortress.;
  • the room in which the altar for the worship of the ancestral gods is located;
  • a special hall, the main function of which at that time was to gather representatives of the highest ranks and strata of the population, as well as the owners of the fortress, who received guest delegations.

When the museum was still a fortress, there were about six dozen houses around it. And the boundaries of all the possessions stretched for as much as 2000 sq. m. in the area!

If we talk more specifically about who the real owners of the magnificent Sam Tung Uk fortress were, then referring to historical sources, it can be argued that they were the ancestors of the Chan family, whose roots belong to one of the Hakka tribes.

By visiting the museum, you can not only admire its exhibits, but also get permission to photograph them.

The address is easy to find on Google maps.
