Hong Kong Taxi
Today, taxis can be called one of the most convenient modes of transport for tourists in Hong Kong. However, not every tourist turns out to be ready for the fact that there are various types of taxis, special rules for their use, as well as special ways of calling. About all this – further.
Types of taxis and prices
To begin with, it is worth noting that there are three different types of taxis in Hong Kong, and each of them has its own fare charging system, as well as a special area open to traffic.
Red – urban taxi
This type of transport is considered not only the most numerous, but also the most expensive. Since Hong Kong has the most expensive gasoline in the world – 3 USD per liter! In addition, it covers the largest territory – you can drive a red car almost all over the city, including to Disneyland, the airport, and Lantau.
But it is forbidden for such cars to enter the territory of Discovery Bay, as well as the island of Mawan (between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.).

You will have to pay HK$ 20 for the first 2 km in such a taxi, and then another HK$ 1.5 for every 200 m. When you drive 9 km, you will already pay HK$1 for every 200 meters. A minute of waiting in a red taxi will cost you HK$1.5, and after 47 minutes – HK$1. In addition, red cars charge a fee for the placement of large luggage: one seat is HK$6. The prices are outdated. There are different prices for 2025. On average, a taxi ride will cost you 60-140 HKD. I generally order UBER more often – it turns out to save a lot on taxis in Hong Kong!
Green – cars of New Territories
This type of taxi usually operates in the northwestern (TuenWan) and northeastern (north of Shatin) parts of the city. In addition, such cars also have the right to transport passengers to certain places, for example, Shunli district, Prince of Wales Hospital, Tsuen Wan and Hung Hom metro stations, Shenzhen Bay, Shatin Racetrack and some others.
The first 2 kilometers in a green taxi will cost you HK$16.5, and then for every 200 meters you will have to pay HK$1.3. When you have traveled 8 kilometers, you will be able to pay HK$1 for every 200 meters. Waiting time in a green car will cost you HK$1.3 per minute. When 36 minutes have passed, you will be able to pay a little less – for 1 HK$. And, again, do not forget about the HK$6 fee for each piece of large luggage.
Blue – cars of Lantau Island
Cars of this type are ready to transport you exclusively on the territory of Lantau Island (except for the territory of Discovery Bay), as well as the island of Chek Lap Kok.
The first 2 kilometers in this taxi will cost you HK$ 15, and then you will have to pay HK$1.3 for every 200 meters. When you drive 20 kilometers in a car, you can already pay HK$ 1.2 for every 200 meters. A minute of waiting will cost you 1.3 HK$. When this number exceeds an hour and 40 minutes, you can already pay 1.2HK$ per minute. The fee for one piece of large luggage in a blue taxi is 6HK$.
The prices are outdated. There are different prices for 2026. On average, a taxi ride will cost you 60-140 HKD.
Calling methods
Through the concierge at the hotel, via the Uber mobile app, or the old-fashioned way:
by phone, however, please note that it will cost you an additional HK$5. Below are some phone numbers that can be used to call various types of taxis.:

It should also be noted that there are about 230 places in the city for passengers to disembark and board a taxi. An additional 46 special places are provided where passengers can only be dropped off from cars. You can easily find these places by using the “Taxi” markings on the asphalt, painted in white.
You can catch a taxi in Hong Kong just on the road. Moreover, keep in mind that a free car usually has a sign on the roof, as well as a small red light at the bottom of the windshield.
