I want to tell you about one of the parks in Hong Kong. Kowloon Park is a kind of oasis of tranquility and tranquility in the midst of bustling city streets and skyscrapers. Here you can walk, admire the birds, play sports, spend time with children (there are playgrounds), look at cute turtles and just have a good time with your family or alone.
Location
The name tells us that the park is located somewhere in Kowloon. And so it is, in the very center of it. A map of the park with the names of the streets that surround it will tell you better than me.
To whom this is not enough, here is the exact address – 22 Austin Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, although this concept seems to me very abstract, since kowloon park covers an area of more than 13 hectares, and it has many entrances and exits.
History
The park was opened on June 24, 1970 by the then governor, Sir David Trench. Prior to that, the Whitfield Barracks of the British Army had been located on the territory of the future park since 1830. A playground in the form of a fort with cannons now reminds of them (read about it below). The park was partially closed from 1975 to 1978, due to the construction of the subway, and from 1987 to 1989 it was rebuilt and seriously modernized, at a cost of $ 300 million, although the entire reconstruction was sponsored by the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club.
What to see?
I’ll tell you in detail about what you can do there, see what to do and how to spend your time.
Let’s start with the birds.
– Lake with birds
It consists of a large pond with flamingos and a small pond with a waterfall. They are home to about 18 species of birds with a total population of about 200. Of course, there are flamingos, black-necked swans, red-nosed divers, ringed teal, Pampas divers, and, of course, our beloved mandarin ducks.
From March to October, the ponds are open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.
From November to February, the ponds are open from 6:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
– Aviary for birds
We continue the theme of birds. There is also a netted network of rooms where more exotic birds are kept (29 species, more than 100 birds). There you can see Yellow and Blue Macaws, Green-winged Macaws, crowned pigeons, maned pigeons and others.
From March to October, the ponds are open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.
From November to February, the ponds are open from 6:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
– If you are with children
A children’s playground is at your service, a standard playground with slides, cabins, climbing walls and pipes. There are two zones on the site: from 2 to 5 years old, and from 5 to 12 years old.
There is another more serious playground, called Discovery Playground, it is a recreated fort of the British army, with a turret, cannons and other things, where children can climb to their heart’s content. For children under 13 years old.
– The Maze
On the territory of Kowloon Park, you can wander through the maze, which is not very high, so do not get lost, and it is not particularly large, 40 meters by 20 meters.
– For flower lovers
The perfect place to take lots of beautiful photos in a whole sea of colorful roses.
– For art lovers
There are sculptures and various compositions made by local and foreign artists and sculptors on the territory of almost 2000 m2.
The territory is divided into two parts: in one part, 12 sculptural compositions are permanently exhibited, and in the second part, 8 more masterpieces are temporarily exhibited.
– Chinese Garden
Everything is standard here, a traditional Chinese gazebo, a pond and a hiking trail.
– Area
Various celebrations, exhibitions and other entertainment events are held on the square. It’s a little empty at normal times.
– Viewing cone
A cone-shaped structure has been built at an altitude of 37 meters above sea level, offering excellent panoramic views of Kowloon Park and the surrounding area.
– Swimming pools
There is also an indoor swimming pool (access is paid) and a sports center (similar). The complex has 4 swimming pools, including one Olympic (50-meter), two 25-meter and one 21-meter for diving. This applies to indoor pools. The complex also has several outdoor pools of various shapes and sizes, for those who just want to swim for their own pleasure without swimming along the paths.
Open from 6:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The pools are closed for repairs every year:
Closed from April 16 to June 5.
Open – from November 1 to March 31
There is a special sports track for athletes, along which 8 places are arranged for training on simulators, uneven bars, and so on. The track is 500 meters long.
There is also a mini soccer field for those who like to kick the ball (open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.).
In general, Kowloon Park is a great place for walking and having a good time. I recommend visiting and relaxing, including if you happen to be in Hong Kong with children.
If you are only in Hong Kong for 2-3 days, you should not visit this park, it is better to go to the Hong Kong Park.
