Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA)
The airport is named Cheeklapkok, after the island on which it was built. It has been operating since 1998 and is the most important transport hub in Southeast Asia. History
An artificial island was built for the construction of the Cheeklapkok Airport. He connected two small islands of Chek Lap Kok and Lam Chau. The embankment connected them to the northern part of Lantau Island, which allowed them to find a place for construction. The construction itself lasted as long as 6 years and cost the Hong Kong treasury $ 20 billion. The bulk of these funds were spent on leveling the islands. Only 44 thousand tons of explosives were needed for this, but sand was still filled in from above, which had to be removed from the seabed, after which everything was rammed and paved.
Operations
For 2020, the Hong Kong Airport has two parallel runways, each of which is almost 4 km long and 60 meters wide. Every hour, 60 planes of 87 airlines land or take off on the runway, which connect Hong Kong with 154 cities around the world.
Terminal 2 will open at Hong Kong Airport on May 27, 2026.
In order for people to comfortably use such a huge structure, a special building was needed. The main task facing the designers was to ensure the maximum speed of passenger service. This task was solved brilliantly – within half an hour after check-in, the passenger finds himself in his seat on the plane. The terminal building is so large that passengers use a special train without a driver and almost three kilometers of moving tracks to move through it.
The airport has two passenger terminals where passengers are checked in, and shopping malls where you can buy anything. Terminal No. 1 consists of an eight-storey building with two elevators. There is an inexpensive restaurant and an observation deck on its roof. Check–in takes place on the first floor, passengers go through immigration and customs control on the fourth, passport control on the sixth, and ticket control on the eighth. The terminal also has an express elevator that takes passengers to the bus and plane. How to get there
The easiest way to reach Hong Kong International Airport is by rail on a special Airport Express high–speed train. Only 30 minutes to the city center! The ticket price is about 100 Hong Kong dollars.
Upon departure, passengers who use this type of transport can check in their luggage the day before departure and check in at Hong Kong and Kowloon stations.
Besides Airport Express, there are also buses. Bus companies will readily transport you to most urban areas.
