Royal yacht club in HK is interesting place, just for once.
Located near Causeway bay metro station.
I came on foot, but usually everyone comes by car or taxi.
Immediately, the signs are intimidating that the entrance is for club members only. But nobody cared about me for the next 4 hours.
I came to the meeting an hour before. I walked everywhere. I looked at the parked boats and fiddling with them.
The bar is kind of weird, unkempt. I would even say abandoned. No one offered me a menu or drinks. I’ve been working on my laptop for a while.
The funny thing about the club is that you can’t talk on the phone. It doesn’t make sense. Because the Chinese are not forbidden to yell.
The audience at the club is quite strange. I’ve been to a lot of networking parties with foreigners.
Most of them were not members of the yacht club either, but invited guests, but they were kind of on their own wave, demented, middle-aged and unremarkable.
Anyway, it was time for a meeting, we sat down in a cafe on the terrace.
The sunset was great. View of both Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula.
The food is average, without enthusiasm. Whiskey and Coke were poured regularly.
It was time to get out and ordered a Uber, left to West Kowloon Station.
Interestingly, 3 months after that, I discovered the old building of this yacht club near the Causeway Bay metro station.
Made of red brick, elegant.
The building was opened in 1908 originally as the clubhouse of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. Following land reclamation work in North Point in the 1930s, the club decided to build a new clubhouse on Kellet island in 1938. relocating there in 1939. The premiseswere later taken over by the Hong Kong government,which used them as staff quarters and a storehouse. In 2010, the government decided to revitalise the building as an exhibition and education centre for the visual arts. The centre opened to the public in its new incarnation as an art space, Oi!, in May 2013.
