Although Hong Kong is considered a densely populated city, there are many places in the New Territories from which civilization has retreated.
Many villages are dead. Or they die. For example, in Fan Lau on Lantau Island, there are three elderly people who sell drinks to tourists.
Only one village was extinct for a while, and then it recovered, now they are engaged in farming there. This Lai Chi-Wo is located in mainland China.
Another example is the village of Ma Wan, on Ma Wan Island. You can see her when you cross the Tsing Ma Bridge to the airport..
The former village of Ma Wan is a ghost town with abandoned houses, crumbling living rooms, and houses on stilts slowly sliding into the ocean.
But just 30 years ago, 2,000 people lived in Ma Wan, most of whom earned their living from fishing and agriculture. It was famous for its seafood restaurants and dried shrimp paste (used for cooking).
Today this place is abandoned. Sun Hung Kai Properties has built a luxury complex called Park Island along with a park (Ma Wan Park) on the north side of Ma Wan Island.
The indigenous people, whose families have lived on the island for over 99 years, have been offered new homes in New Ma Wan Village, an apartment complex next to Park Island.
At the moment, this ghost village should find a new life, as it is being rebuilt into a kind of recreation complex for artists and ecotourism. Let’s see what happens in the end in a couple of years.
Update 2025: The village has really been transformed and it is very beautiful there now!!!!!!!!
